As a creative, you most definitely appreciate the flexibility that comes with the freedom to work from home. (And also the bad habits you know you have…..) You don’t have to deal with the rigid 9 to 5, or the claustrophobic cubicle. But remember you still need to maintain your creativity, if anything productive is to come out of it.
Here are three simple tips that can help you keep your creative juices flowing as you work from home:
1. Environment is everything.
It may sound a little silly, but your environment needs to allow for mistakes. Choose what is conducive to creativity. Constantly being conscious of who may hear you or look at your unfinished painting means you’re blocking your energy. Feel safe enough to allow your talent to run wild. Change your setting if you need to.
2. Keep it fun.
As artists, we feed off of our creativity. Think about how easy it is for kids to see objects for what they can be, instead of what they actually are. A stick is a magic wand, or a box is a spaceship. Then we get older.
Creative sessions can get a little dull and the lack of ideas frustrating. If this is the case, then it may be time to switch it up! Bring in some fun.
Say you’re a photographer out and about, hoping to capture something amazing. Try shifting your focus to just enjoying the walk. Take in the scenery. The photo will come.
3. Remember communication is destructive if it’s a distraction.
Many brilliant ideas come to you when you’re communicating with other artists, strangers or even people you love. However, there comes a time when you just need to unplug, step back and spend time with yourself. How far your thoughts can go when it’s all you have going on can surprise you!
